FH if you read what I wrote you will see that it is my personal opinion which if I remember I am entitled to, and 1 of the trainers who said they prefered the other 2 courses actually had had 2 winners during the day( with unfit horses apparently) and still says the same this am. Pirates I am not sure who said that and I have not heard that opinion around here. He is entitled to his opinion as well but that is not saying he is right.

Scottsville and Greyville are imo more ''specialist'' tracks...

Thats why I remember it so well...it was the last time i caught one
with the benefit of hindsight i would have been better off if i had missed it and become disillusioned with the game (

This quote is very true. Clairwood is the fairest track in the country for young horses bar none.
I keep all sorts of stats and the Percentages of winning favourites in Maiden Plate/ Maiden Juvenile Plates for the racing season 1 Aug 2011 to 31 July 2012 per track (main centres only) in South Africa are:
MAIDEN PLATES (% winning favourites)
Total Wins Total Races Total %
340 974 35%
NATAL Wins NATAL Races NATAL %
123 307 40%
CWD 35 87 40%
SVL 45 114 39%
GRY 43 106 41%
GAU Wins GAU Races GAU %
125 413 30%
TUR 65 185 35%
VAL 60 228 26%
CAPE Wins CAPE Races CAPE %
92 254 36%
KWT 65 175 37%
DBV 27 79 34%
MAIDEN JUVENILE PLATES (% winning favourites)
Total Wins Total Races Total %
89 198 45%
NATAL Wins NATAL Races NATAL %
36 70 51%
CWD 9 17 53%
SVL 14 32 44%
GRY 13 21 62%
GAU Wins GAU Races GAU %
19 68 28%
TUR 7 28 25%
VAL 12 40 30%
CAPE Wins CAPE Races CAPE %
34 60 57%
KWT 27 47 57%
DBV 7 13 54%
If you are backing a younger maiden horse, you want it to be running in Natal. The percentages in Natal are almost the same but most of the bigger stables (De Kock, Laird) tend to school their youngsters at Clairwood.
The upcountry tracks are more unforgiving and fewer maiden favourites win there.
