Good for the CEO Denzil Pillay to request for feedback from the various parties, just wondering who was responsible for hiking the points the first time round.

Whispers tell me that the higher the merit rating the more chance there is of selling a horse overseas and it opens up many more horses for sale to that market and even higher prices here. That's what we are hearing?

Louis G made the most telling observation "the system right now, has produced more multiple winners rated below 70 than those rated above 70. Much more.....about 3 to 1. " This must be the biggest failure of the MR system!
This can not be right . Bring back a RFS or a system that rewards the better horse

Taban ( and others)
Good horses get retired and put to stud. Sometimes as 1 or 2 time winners.
You are surely not saying that
Henry higgins 8 time winner and perfectly campaigned in handicaps
Is the same calibre of horse as
Soft falling rain 8 time winner but above average hence campaigned differently

As i have said before maybe the solution lies with a different approach to stakes.
So introduce Maidens worth R200k
and handicaps for horses rated < 70 cut prize money in half. then the poor horses will HAVE to be more consistent and win more races albeit at a lower level and for less money.
bring in sellers and claimers
there HAS to be a place for lower (majority) of horses to race and there has to be races for them.
Bring back more novices and graduations BUT make them conditional i.e. : only for 2 time winners rated higher than 85

Please send those suggestions to the CEO of the NHA , there is merit [xcuse the pun] in it and easy enough they are open to suggestions.

Hi Easy. Not at all. My frustration lies with the horse that is not top of the pile. The type of horse who is above average rated say 85-105 but not good enough to win the graded races and, if male, to head for stud.
In the current system, your horse wins a maiden early. He gets a serious MR bump (although limitations were necessitated, thank goodness). Whatever you do, don't win the next start- now you get seriously lumbered. You have a crack at the features but turn out to be just below feature race winning material. You are now screwed! I know they should be campaigned in fixed weight races, but these are few and far between.
Now before everyone says a good trainer should know what your horse's MR is and then use the system in your favour, there are a myriad of external factors that can foul up this theory. So whilst I agree with this ideal/principle, in practise its not always as simple. I just think it would be great if the above type horse having had a crack at the higher honours could fall back into a system whereby he now has many options against horses with similar wins to their credit and doesn't ultimately retire a 3 time winner (MR rated 100) (maiden, novice, graduation) vs an 8x winning 75 MR horse

The National Board of The National Horseracing Authority considered complaints made against the 6 point merit rating increase instituted on 1 August 2013.
Mindful of criticism that the increase may have had the unintended consequence of disadvantaging certain categories of horses, including the international ratings of South African horses, the Board determined to appoint the following to fully consider all issues pertinent to this matter including the merit and detail of the complaints, the extent of any disadvantage, and to appropriately assess whether any error of research, rationality, process or communication was made.
In order to fully inform itself of all facts and consequences, the Review Board hereby invites written submissions by 8 November 2013 or oral representations to be heard at the NHA offices at Turffontein on 11 November 2013. Appointments for oral representation can be made through the office of the Chief Executive.
The Review Board will comprise Robin Bruss, Patrick Davis, Graeme Hawkins and David McGillivray.
