Frodo said: "Overall, I think we are saying mostly the same thing, your view seems to be that the MR system as being applied right now, is failing us most of the time and is only being applied correctly every now and then, while I think that the MR system is being applied correctly most of the time and is only failing us every now and then."
Agree 100%.
Furthermore, in any other industry if they changed the system people would whinge for a month or two and then get on with it - a lot of trainers are still whingeing about the MR system umpteen years later and still talk about one-time winners, two-time winners etc - when are they going to start applying themselves to the "new" system?
Here's a quote from Sean Tarry in 1999 in an article by Nikki Garner: “But probably the most important thing I learnt in those years was something a lot of trainers miss. Yes, the animal is very important and a trainer has to be a good horseman, but horseracing is all about competition. If you don’t know how or where to compete, it doesn’t matter how good your horses are, they won’t go far. That is one of my strengths: I identify the right opposition. I understood race figures and now understand merit ratings and I place my horses accordingly.”
Is it coincidence that he is where he is today?

Who says it has chased punters away? The RF system was just lucky to be in the days when racing was the only legalised form of gambling.

So who is responsible for 'educating the punters' ? Nobody 'educates' me when I'm trying to figure out where I can get my beers at the cheapest price - and nobody 'educates' me on whether the fact that de Villiers is starting for WP this weekend boosts their winning chance - it is up to me to figure out these things- sometimes I think the 'punters' are plain too lazy to use their brains :S

One thing's for sure with the RF system, good horses went through the divisions right to the top and many horses won over 10 races in their careers.
To date only Hear the Drums comes to mind as winner of over 20 races of which quite a few were achieved in Pinnacle Plates thrown in at wts.

But, unbeknown to us all, should a juvenile have run in open company before it turned 3, it would also be raised 6 points. Sound like a circus? Well, it is a circus! And no, this is not 1st April…
so what must handicappers do if the juvenile run a length behind a 80 ( previously the 74 )? must they give the juvenile the 78 or the 72? i see the horse you talk about louis on the run she finish third so she get the 6 points like she should. again i say this is no the handicapper fault this is the trainer fault

I disagree with you Frodo, horse racing punting is a special skill. I believe the reason most people walk away or do not come into racing is because they don't know how to win and nobody can afford to lose perpetually unless they are addicts......
So you want to pull the crowd to racing and then hope that somehow they will figure it out on their own? as strange as it sounds a lot of punters still can't differentiate between a maiden and a handicap.....
if you want people to stay in the game then teach them how to enjoy it. Those in charge of racing must educate their clientele

The RF system had better integrity from the point of view that a horse could not become better handicapped in a few weeks or months time so there was no point in running a horse other than to its best ability - MR can be manipulated by a series of below ability races and thereby creating a "handicap certainty"
Any system that is open to manipulation will be manipulated-to believe anything else is naive!
Ignoring the danger of skulduggery, for young horses to be prevented from earning stakes by horses on "old age discounts", inhibits me from purchasing a young horse.
Similar to Gary Player being allowed to remain competitive in the masters, by letting him play off the ladies tees!
MR should not reduce other than in the case of clear error and there should be many more plate races to allow better horses to win more races-why pay R500,000 for a horse if a R5000 horse is going to be just as competitive after the maiden victory?

That's why trainers today should be glad to have the MR system. A mediocre horse can still stay in training whereas I would guess that in those days once they had won a couple of races that was the end of their career because they would invariably be up against these good horses that were going through the divisions. I don't know much about the RF system but do know that without the MR system there would be far less horses in training.
