Garrick, an excellent summary, of the real situation.
Off course there may be a little more light at the end of the tunnel if the RA and Phumelela was not ONE. Many people may dissagree with me about this, but most of them will already sit at the main racing table, earning an income directly or indirectly from P or the RA. That makes the ONE actually MANY, and eventually a very close knit little "family". Many of racings problems in SA can be explained by this.

Restructuring of operations and competition
It appears from what I've read on this site and others is that racing is run haphazardly by multiple bodies all claiming to have a stake in racing and all claiming to have racing's best interests at heart. The problem that repeats itself though is that no one body is accountable. There is this constant fogging and excuses shift from one body to the next.
Personally I do not see what the point of the RA is. Why do we not have the same thing in the Gold Circle region or is Gold Circle all encompassing. Before this becomes what I did not intend it to be and drift off the intention of this post. What can I bring to racing?
The structure is wrong. The various bodies are self serving and there seems to be no synergy between bodies. On the other hand do we need a single racing body controlling all aspects of racing. No, racing parts should be divided up into parts that are commercially viable sustainable businesses which operate in a free market environment. Competition should be encouraged. Gambling operations should not control TV coverage for example. Why? well its obvious with gambling ops controlling coverage, all you get is a slot machine.
Gold Circle and Phumelela should cut ties completely therefore creating competitive gambling operations. This is probably the hardest pill to swallow for most as it flies in the face that all that has been done so far. There is a lot of unhappiness with P and RA etc but no move by stakeholders in the region to support Gold Circle probably due to the PGE arrangement, which to me seems like a one sided affair. GC tied up in lopsided agreements in favour of P. In a perfect world I would like to see GC totes competing in the P region and vice verse. Competition leads to a healthier, stronger industry. GC dominates in terms of hosting feature race days in SA, whilst P pushes turnover and gambling opportunities. In reality GC is closer to what Karel has spoken about than P. In a free market environment more job opportunities will be created.
What does racing do to educate children on employment opportunities in racing Nil.
The diamonds need to be introduced at a much quicker rate than they currently are.
Multi use facilities. The development of Meydan is a model for the rest of the world to follow. As the earths population mass expands, the more demand will be placed on land requirements. The Arabs have addressed this by making the venue a multi purpose multi use facility much in line with what has been done with our new football stadiums.
Turfies may be SA's premier racecourse but it is doomed in terms of location. I believe that there are only a few choices for this. Lobby government to rejuvenate the area or move. Why has there been no new development in terms of facilities or racecourses. Maybe its a control and plunder situation. Perhaps we need to look at the sheiks to invest and take ownership of a racecourse. Racecourse should compete too.
Its all pie in the sky you may think, I believe anything is possible. Some of the greatest thinkers have come out of SA and have gone on to greatness.. They are unbound by limited conservative model of thinking which we all naturally subscribe to. Ive said it before, what would Sol Kerzner have done with racing.
Racing needs to think and act beyond the boundaries of its genetically inherited South African conservativeness.

Good points above from Alcaponee, but there is only one problem!!!
P would never allow cometing totes or anything that would detract from its business source as it is a public company and has one and ONLY one interest here......MAKING MONEY!!!
Horse racing has become second rate and has taken a back seat to profit mongering...Thats why P is run by Accountants and lawyers, not racing men.

Wouldn't say that they took each other on. Still have no answers on how income flows but would hazard a guess that income generated in a P tote flows to P and income in a GC tote flows to GC therefore venues have no relevance

Sunday's turnover was damaged by SA races going off within 2 minutes of each other. It all went downhill when the Turffontein presentation ceremony overran by 15 minutes. Dual meetings on a Sunday don't really work even with proper gaps between races.

Racing is much like the world economy.
It not that the money disappeared.
The same amount of money plus the extra that got printed by each country on the sly during the last two years are still around.
We all blame robert for printing more money when they needed more cash, but the USA did the same, and so did we.
We did it the smarter way,
The government did not send trucks like Robert, to the press to colect the cash, and drove it down to the closeest ABSA, STANDARD,FNB or NEDBANK to make deposits.
No, they extended their own overdrafts at the POSTBANK, issued BG (Bank Guarantees) like the one they did yesterday for SABC (R1,4B).
This BG ( covered by the POSTBANK overdraft) is now presented to the SABC bankers, be it ABSA, STANDARD, FNB or NEDBANK.
THE SABC bankers must come up with the money now, money they dont have.
At the end of December 2008, Standard Bank had total assets of R909.3bn.
now about R900bn is toxic.???
Absa Bank had total assets of R735.0bn
now about R700bn is toxic.???
Nedbank had total assets of R547.1bn.
now about R500bn is toxic.???
At the end of June 2008, FirstRand Bank had total assets of R588.1bn.
now about R550bn is toxic.???
At the end of March 2009, Investec Bank had total assets of R181.3bn.
now about R180bn is toxic.???
All of the banks keep the repossed properties on the defaulters name, hence they dont have to transfer the property from the "Assets" debtors book to "Liabilities"
debt written off on the balance sheet.
should they do accounts the way SARS expects us to do accounting, they will all be delisted from the JSE.
So, they inturn extent their overdrafts beyond the point of no return and clear the cheques, IBT, EFT or cash withdrawals done by SABC.
Hence we find our banks downgraded to C and -C levels.
and the levels dont go to Z.
we are at the bottom end.
It with confidence that we can say that the R1.4b will be spend by end Feb 2010, 3 months from now.
The money did not disappear, it got paid to someone.
But, common sense tells us that we cannot issue another BG to the SABC in March.
so, to fix the problem,
what needs to happen...
a total collaps of the SOUTH AFRICAN ECONOMY..
a 3rd world war..
or 200 years of conservative business spending..
Racing and Phumelela will collaps..then taken over by a new group..and then they will prosper again...only a question of WHEN...

a perspective on the relative strenghts of the banks before the collaps..
RSA collects and spends all of ABSA in 1 year..
after the collaps
RSA collects and spends all of all the banks in 1 year..
At the end of December 2008, Standard Bank had total assets of R909.3bn.
Absa Bank had total assets of R735.0bn
Nedbank had total assets of R547.1bn.
At the end of June 2008, FirstRand Bank had total assets of R588.1bn.
At the end of March 2009, Investec Bank had total assets of R181.3bn.
another perspective

Al my question to Phumelela is can they not see the potential of working with the community of Turffs and it's surrounds to improve the area? Why wait for government to help out - take control, lobby the other stakeholders in the area (For goodness sakes surely racing must be the biggest industry in the area) Sponsor the local police station etc Find a local charity/foster home, school' etc in the area and show some corporate responsibility -it will go a long way to improve racing's image much like the early Lotto story - "I don't mind losing cause my R6 goes to charity". Advertise in the local paper - Sponsor cop of the month or Crime page etc GIVE BACK and you will receive double (Maybe they are putting back but not enough (Not interested in the horse care unit - Help the community to lift their game etc) When it comes to night racing pay some local guys to line stand outside the course in reflective gear to act as a deterrent to criminals etc Find an innovative way to use that mine dump. Sponsor a local soccer league etc OR just leave things as they are? Hillbrow, Yeoville, etc
