WHAT CAN YOU BRING TO RACING? - APATHY!
15 years 9 months ago
The intention of this thread is to make a positive contribution to racing by suggesting ideas that can benefit racing as a whole. The idea stems from views expressed on the international jockeys thread.
It is very easy to point out what is wrong with the industry, especially after its all gone wrong but very difficult to express views on how to make things better.
We are well versed on the problems that racing is faced with, therefore, please post contributions in a positive manor and try and forget about what we all now know. Tell us what you would do to make the industry better. Who knows someone in power might just read your suggestion and use it to the benefit the industry as a whole.
There are some really bright minded thinking people on this forum. Let's make use of this to contribute positively. No winning or losing ideas maybe a few winning ideas for racing as a whole.

Al we have world class facilities
We have many visitors and I have been racing overseas, the value you get on a SA race track is second to none
Take a big day, the big T vs Cheltenham
Here you can have a 5 star meal in any of the facilities, get entrance for next to nothing have a tv on your table, watch the race from a panoramic view, etc, etc
Last year if not mistaken it was 70 quid to get into the track, queue up for a bet, beer in plastic mug, lucky to see a tv with no sound, never mind a horse in the flesh, jammed packed etc, etc
trust me for overseas visitors we have plenty to offer far better deal than trying to watch a soccer game with these bloody trumpets in your ear
imo

Lmao trumpets ...i gt a few issues bt 1 that cums to mind first is sunday and the way the days events clashed.the big T event was late.fully knwing the times of the originaly booked scv event they stil (intentionaly in my view) delayed it til exactly the time scv runners are loading up.wud it a been such a problem to delay the event 30min instead of 15?or why didnt they start earlier.they knw they had a welcoming ceremony planned.unnececary crap if iuame.maybe in otha countries its the norm bt s.a should strive to be betta than that.we dnt hav 1000 tracks here like the uk?

I have said it before and I'll say it again. If you want to better this industry you have to start by attracting new punters to the game. You have to educate new and existing punters on how to fill in betting slips and how to take bets. The easier you make it for the punter the better.......
Lets look at the knock on effect.
More punters, bigger pools, better revenue for EVERYONE!
Once you have the punter cornered you can try develop the punter (not the yuppie from UJ) into a racehorse owner.
It is a circle that rolls on and on.....I keep preaching to deaf ears! The punter is probably THE most important part of racing today.
Both Andrewest and I have discussed in a different thread how this training could benefit the industry.
Marketing to the masses would be ideal. Get the lotto people away from playing the lotto and get them involved in racing. (similar for them.....numbers game)
Advertising, advertising, advertising...............
I was wondering. When I still used to live in SA I never ONCE saw an advert on TV for horse race BETTING....I mean they used to advertise the met and july but is Phumelela allowed to advertise the gambling aspect of their business on TV????

Some years ago racing in the USA found itself in trouble. After much research and debating they decided on the fix and the starting point.....
Totally fix the integrity of racing and thereby attempt to fix the public perception, which was the main cause of their problems.
Compare that to the RA vote that will take place on Nov 25. There does not have to be somthing wrong with racing, just the perception that there is will destroy racing. What will the RA do on 25 Nov? Start fixing racing or put the destruction into freefall.

I agree with all above comments...
Especially with Tommy - get the lotto people into racing...
I would love to see a pick 8 or pick 9 in operation where you have to select the winning horse in each race of the day and you are only allowed to pick one horse per race at the same ammount it costs to play lotto namely R2.50 per combination and if there are no winners the pool is carried over to the next race meeting until we get a winner. Believe me we can create a bigger pool than in the lotto and racing will win. We can even have consolation prizes like the lotto where they have 5 plus bonus and in racing have a 5,6,7,8,legs and bonus for someone that picks 5 straight legs and 3 out scenario obviously with lower payouts...
Just an idea...
Also like greg's idea with VIP memberships and special packages...
The charity raceday idea works well ...only get random public racegoers and pick a few races on the day where they draw a number of a horse and sponsor betting vouchers per amount with regards where the horse finishes with different prize tags..
Furthermore...transparency...have interview with each trainer in parade ring before a race especially when a horse ran poorly in last race and then wins and a trainer can let us know why the last run was poor ie:injection, poor going, bleeding, coughing; jockey didn't ride to instructions etc...and why it can suddenly iprove and win again cause horses don't have voices to tell us they didn't have a good sleep, headache etc, but the trainer is the horses voice...
Also jus't an idea...

ALCAPONEE ive got the perfect remedy for your clever question.Firstly ask yourself what do people want out of our game, simple answer 'A CHAMPION',N0w the next step is to give them what they want, and if you want a side bet ill gaurantee you a capacity crowd in any of the Provinces.Get the right press coverage and trainers and like the past get the MATCH RACE between 2 horses that have won like stars, ask MR MIKE AZZIE about the match race between Brainteaser vrs Divine Act,capacity crowd superb press hype, and brilliant racing, and the winners were the public as they spoke about this event for years on end.

We can add about 200,000 white males to the industry within 6 months.
this is the question.
these 200,000 white males have a choice to make :
due to their circumstances
1. trade on the forex sites popping up by the 100's
online courses
dummy trading accounts
online call centre
software programs to be downloaded for free
geared 200:1 now
trading currencies
the 200,000 white males are educated
the indian, black, colored will follow when they see the money
the indian, black, colored guys are also educated
2. trade on the tote
must hold 5 day workshops in every town
run by ex jockeys
tab must open dummy trading accounts
must supply crystal reports or cognos as software tool and history
3. do security work at the local shopping centre
4. clean the gutters, clean the pool, wait for beter days..
but
if the JSE or emarket where these guys trade, dont have transperrancy, they guys will withdraw their funds..
tote cannot furnish bull explanations about comingle with AUS- Quartet..

My suggestion to the peeps in the know. is whether a big day or not offer everyone that enters the course a R100 betting voucher. Budget on say a 1000 + people per race meeting.
Link this to a debit card type system. Can only be used on course
You know the person will more than likely spend money on Food and Drink to cover the 100k per meeting.
Plus the R100 probably wont make it past the 1st race. These people would also stimulate interest in the overseas pools which are just sad and most big punters probably just ignore from a tote perspective.
400 Meetings or so a year not a big budget item and all people love freebies.

I have pounded the same drum, for ever,on the inegrity of racing. There is no lack of new gamblers looking to wager(check the poker explosion).
As I have posted before,I have discussed with young poker players why they don't race...consensus....like betting on Pro wrestling???
What we need in this regard is a thorough revision of the NHA rules so that they are,and SEEN to be,enforced!
The other obvious anomoly in racing is that the entire business model is dependant on betting ( no punters=no betting=no stakes =no owners=no trainers=no breeders)HOWEVER I challenge anybody to show any recognition of punters within the industry.
Petty as it may sound, this last week-end everybody and his dog were thanked and brown nosed, but NO MENTION OF THE PUNTERS AT ALL.
The greatest competition to racing is it's own incompetence and it completely ignores its main customer!
I can vouch for the fact that Saftote regard clients as a nuisance!
