Funny thing that when the casinos opened (particularly Gold Reef) they had to do as much as they could for the upliftment of the area where the casino was built as well as the surrounding areas. I believe there muct have been some kind of negotiations between P and Gold Reef in the beginning as there were road signs put up in conjunction with P and Gold Reef from the N1 going south pointing to both the "turffontein Race course" as well as "Gold Reef City".

Now inbetween all this "scrummaging" surely they should have thought of also cleaning up the area surrounding both properties?

Especially now Turffontein should be looked at as a prime reason for why Rosettenville/Turffontein and the like should be cleaned up!!!

Is this also not part of Phumelelas "bid commitments" if it were to the government to keep the area in and surrounding Turffontein at least up to spec???

I say scrap the whole place and buy back Newmarket!!!!

LOL

Hope we can have some big wigs read some of the posts on here the last few days......There have been some excellent suggestions floating around.

Perhaps Margaret can print out some of these threads and hand them to David Attenborough???

tommy hotspur:

There was earnest (and 'genuinely solemn') talk of spatial development, upliftment of local community, employment (the industry shed over 4 000 jobs within 3 years!) black economic empowerment, skills transfer...et al!

If there ever was a bunch of gullible idiots, it is the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (starting with then Premier Tokyo Sexwale) which digested every word of Jabu Molekethi and the Gambling Board without even batting an eye!

When I attempted to clarify the implications, I was promptly told to shut up and let the chairman do the talking and answering!

Democracy, public interest and freedom of speech...my foot!

I couldn't agree with you more Umlilo,

Its not about freedom of speech but rather the freedom of the ones speaking!!!

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others"!!! - George Orwell

I believe this saying from Animal Farm fits in PERFECTLY with racing and government in general in South Africa.

imvho

Just this morning I see on Morning Live (without Voyu!) a 'guaranteed R10 million' Lotto pool being advertised; now how difficult would it be for P (or GC) to counter this? Just a few well timed slots needed showing in real simple terms, the actual chances of getting a share of the Lotto pool as opposed to the chances of sharing in a Pick 6 pool - especially for 'big' carryover meetings? Risk vs Reward and all that?

The lotto operator watches racing closely. You will note that there is always a big pool on offer on big race days. Normally R20 mil. We are in a recession though.

Here's a piece from a report written by an American who goes to the Japan Cup.
It gives some background on Japan's woes.

NAOHIRO GODA IS MY GO-TO GUY on all matters pertaining to Japanese racing. He is a world traveler, savvy about racing and breeding just about anywhere, but a true expert on what’s going on in Japan. Goda said 2009 will be the 12th consecutive year that pari-mutuel betting on JRA racing will be down—despite numerous measures by the government entity to increase handle through an expanded menu, a rearranged schedule of Grade 1 races in the autumn, and even a reduced takeout promotion on some major races. In 2011, the JRA will be introducing a pick five wager (similar to pick threes, pick fours, and pick sixes in the U.S.). Multi-race wagers have previously not been legal in Japan.

The big problem, Goda said, is that Japan’s trendy youth market is less and less interested in the sport of horse racing. They are more interested in computer games and other sports, especially soccer. Betting on soccer has been introduced in the last decade, and that’s hurt horse racing, too. One of the most popular bets on soccer is a computer assisted wager that eliminates any need to think or handicap.

Horse racing isn’t the only form of gambling that is suffering in Japan. Legal betting on motorboats and bicycle racing is down, too, and the Pachinko parlors (the closest thing Japan has to slot machines) are also off.

Despite the dire news about Japanese horse racing, it’s still a pretty popular sport, as evidenced by the throng of writers and photographers on hand for Thursday morning’s workouts and press conference. Tokyo’s daily sports newspapers are devoting several pages to the Japan Cup, despite the absence of a true Japanese superstar this year. It is still big business and Sunday’s Japan Cup will be sure to draw more than 100,000 people to Tokyo race course, and handle on the race will dwarf what is wagered on Kentucky Derby or Breeders’ Cup Day in the United States

Its true that soccer take over from horse racing...
soccer is out performing shares too..

simple reason..
soccer game is like a boardroom meeting of a listed company..
shares will go up or fall, once the meeting is concluded..
hence I must guess the result..

however in soccer..
the boardroom is open to everyone to view..
90 min meeting..
and if a board member is not shaping..he is replaced with a new board member

so in racing or shares ... delayed, I have to guess..who is scheming who..
soccer is .........realtime honest factual..I can bet as we go along...

I attended an interesting workshop yesterday hosted by a division of SA's leading short term insurer and something struck a cord whilst I was there and that was:

This workshop was provided so that brokers could gain knowledge on a particular product within a division of the company. The difference in the way that this company does things compared to some of the other insurers is that the divisions do not divorce themselves from the brand. There is no separate branding for this division. They fall under the "umbrella" and the branding remains untouched by the divisions own branding.

How can we compare this with racing. Well racing (the parent) is unbranded or at least is not a household, easily recognisable brand such as the lotto or silversands, or piggs peak or african palace or some of the other casinos. Each of racings parts are branded and as said before, self serving.

Is it not time to brand racing and leave the brand untouched by the many bodies. Almost symbolic in a sense. You owe to your employer to protect the brand. This applys to owners too. Racing employs your capital so that races can run.

We all owe something to the brand, win or lose.
