The problem with the Merit Rating system as it is currently applied is that it does not differentiate between performance and ability. One figure is produced that is supposed to reflect both performance and ability but we know that this is not always the case.
My suggestion is simple split the two, how? pick a line horse and let the computer/clerk compile the performance of each horse that ran in that race, this will be the Performance rating. This rating will obviously change from race to race.
To get the ability rating is then the duty of the handicappers. To do this they need to take into account all the variables before assign a figure to a horse. for a example it must have raced under suitable conditions such as distance bred for, it must have had trouble-free trips, must have been in optimal condition to run its best race. This figure will not be going up and down on a weekly basis but will seek to reflect a horse's true ability over time.
Then simply run handicaps on Performance ratings and Conditions races on Ability ratings. The ability rating will be synonymous with the horse whereas performance rating will not unless of course they happen to be the same at that point in time...

Why do people like you quote length of time as the barometer for knowledge?

What about that MDK grey that was said to be unbeatable because as a juvenile she ran close up to high rated horses.

What Easy says about Sir Mark can be done but what we must not forget is that it is not the only horse in the race and He/She could be beaten or it could get colic/go lame the day before the proposed race and then Flash Harry's R100000 comes into reality. The idea could work but in reality there are too many factors against it coming off.

The whole system at the moment works of the presumstion that every horse runs to his true abbility everyday it runs but as lous and graig will testify that thats not possible the horse is not a machine that can be put on a dyno miutes before it races to see if it puts out the desired kw's unfortunatly the handicappers think so
